Meta Fined $100,000 A Day In Norway For Violating Privacy

The Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) will impose a $100,000 fine on Meta for allegedly violating the privacy of the country's users. Fines will be imposed every day from August 4 to November 3 if Meta does not take action not to use user data.

According to Norwegian law, Meta cannot use user data such as their location for the purpose of displaying targeted ads. Datatilsynet has referred measures. them to the European Data Protection Board which can cause Meta to be fined at the level of the European Union (EU).

Targeted advertising is prohibited in European Union member states due to data protection laws. It is one of the reasons why Threads cannot be launched in the EU because Instagram data cannot be automatically transferred to this new platform even under the Meta umbrella.
