The idea of using body cameras on members of the Royal Malaysian Police was first voiced in 2020 by the Chief of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador. After almost four years, its use will finally begin in 2024 with the acceptance of the first 7000 body camera units.
The PDRM is still in the process of evaluating tenders submitted by 129 companies according to Bukit Aman Logistics and Technology Department Director Sahabudin Abd Manan. In December last year, the government approved RM30 million to be used to support the system, support equipment and training for the use of body cameras by PDRM members. Body cameras will be used to help enforcement to deal with community crime.
In the neighboring country of Singapore, the use of body cameras has been done since 2015. Meanwhile in developed countries it is used extensively with several videos released to the public for incidents such as in Uvalde. It can help the police to conduct operations more transparently because all the steps taken by the police are recorded all the time.
