Not to be forgotten is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 which was also launched alongside the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 today. It received more updates on the design when compared to its bigger brother. A change to the hinge that now folds the inner screen into a teardrop shape allows the device to be fully closed for the first time since launch.
The external screen is now named Flex Window with a size of 3.4″ Super AMOLED with a refresh rate of 60Hz. With a larger screen messages can be read and replied to without opening the device first because a full keyboard will be displayed on the screen.
There are several other applications natively supported on Flex Window such as Youtube, Messages, WhatsApp and Netflix. When the screen is open, the YouTube content being watched will continue to play on the 6.7″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X 120Hz screen. Again no changes to the internal screen which retains the UTG durable glass surface.
This is matched with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, 8GB LPDDR5X memory, up to 512GB UFD 4.0 storage and a 3700 mAh battery that supports 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. In terms of the main camera, a 12MP OIS wide-angle lens and a 12MP ultra-wide lens are used on the back paired with a 10MP selfie camera on the front. Samsung kept the sensor used by the Z Fold4 on the Z Fold5 with improvements made to the software only.
The body passes the IPX8 standard which allows it to be immersed in water. Flex Mode allows the device to be folded 90 degrees to take videos or photos without a special stand. This feature can also be used on Flex Window. The operating system is One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13. Samsung provides four Android version updates and five years of security patches to the Z Flip5.
Some new accessories were also produced such as a translucent frame with an NFC panel. The NFC panel has themes like Marvel, Disney and Pringles. When the panel is installed on the Z Flip5 body, Flex Windows will display a special theme that is uniform with the theme on this NFC panel. These panels will be sold separately in collaboration with several leading brands.
