Sarawak is currently testing closed circuit cameras (CCTV) based on artificial intelligence (AI) at traffic lights, around the city of Miri. This step is in an effort to reduce traffic offenses, accidents and road congestion.
For now, CCTV is installed at traffic lights on Jalan Merbau and Jalan Pujut-Miri. Through the use of artificial intelligence technology, this CCTV can record vehicle speed limits, identify vehicle registration numbers, and record a number of traffic offenses.
This CCTV is also said to be able to identify the fault of using a mobile phone while driving, and record it. With this technology as well, it is expected to be able to identify drivers who often make mistakes at a high rate, at the same time helping in efforts to reduce accidents and crashes.
For this initial stage, it is in the concept testing phase - and it is not impossible to expand it to other areas around Sarawak if everything goes well.
