Xiaomi Is Developing Devices With Over-the-Air Gesture Control Support

For a long time, device manufacturers have tried to mimic the power of The Force in Star Wars, which is the power to move things with the mind and hand movements. The LG G8 ThinQ was one of the first with Air Motion and then the Google Pixel 4 with Motion Sense which uses the Soli radar sensor.

Recently Xiaomi seems to want to offer more or less the same features on other Xiaomi devices and may be able to be used by other MIUI devices.

This feature was reported by Kacper Skrzypek via the MIUIPolska site. Users can use over-the-air gesture controls to control media playback, control volume, skip music, change pages, answer or end calls without touching the device. This feature is also said to be able to lock the device's screen when the user is far away and the screen lights up when the user approaches the device.

Additionally, this feature will use a 3D ToF sensor that has not been integrated on a smartphone for a long time. This means that Xiaomi will probably offer this feature on new model devices. The last time a 3D ToF sensor was included was on the Mi 8 for a Face ID-like feature.

There is no doubt that this kind of control idea makes the user like a Jedi knight in the real world. It's a shame that the sensors and software are not so robust that hands and gestures cannot be detected properly, making the use of these controls a pain.

For the new device Honor Magic5 Pro, OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite and some Oppo devices also already offer more or less the same features, only limited to answering phone calls only.
