In 2021, Meta launched Ray-Ban Stories, a pair of smart sunglasses equipped with a camera. The design is similar to normal Ray-Ban sunglasses which are stylish with the camera not being so obvious. According to a Wall Street Journal report, after almost two years of being released, the document reveals that only around 300,000 pairs of Ray-Ban Stories have been successfully sold.
Of this figure, only 27,000 pairs of these glasses are still in active use every month. In addition, the return rate is around 13%. Customer feedback has also been underwhelming with issues such as batteries not lasting long, difficulty transferring media out, unsatisfactory voice control and issues with the audio system.
Ray-Ban Stories are Meta's first smart glasses sold to the public. Before that Project Aria was announced with it only being given to staff to test around the Meta campus. Although the sales of the first generation of Ray-Ban Stories were not encouraging, Meta is expected to launch the second generation this year with several improvements.
