Previously the purchase of ARM by NVIDIA was blocked due to objections that it would create monopoly issues in the future. Therefore, the owner of ARM, Softbank will offer an IPO of ARM shares in the near future. The latest Apple, Samsung, Intel and NVIDIA are reported to be investing in this IPO right after it is offered next September.
The investment from the tech giant will ensure that ARM's direction can be controlled according to the company's needs. Prior to the IPO offering, Samsung and Intel had reportedly shown interest in buying ARM.
Currently the ARM architecture is used by over 90% of the world's mobile devices. Because of this market dominance, companies from China began to support the RISC-V open source chip architecture as a backup if they were prevented from accessing ARM technology.
This week Bosch, Infineon, Nordic, NXP, and Qualcomm formed new companies to expand the use of the RISC-V architecture among industry players. Interestingly RISC-V also received support from Google, Intel, and Seagate.
