Downfall Security Update For Intel CPUs Causes Sudden Performance Drops

Last week we reported on Downfall security vulnerabilities for a large number of Intel Core processor chip series launched, from the Skylake series to Rocket Lake.

Intel appears to have already released a security update that fixes this vulnerability, but according to Linux hardware review website Phoronix, which tested the performance of these processing chips after this update was released, they found that a number of them have shown a decrease in performance.

The website used benchmarking software such as OSPRay and Neural Magic to test CPU capabilities before and after the update was applied, and showed a performance drop of as high as 33 percent after it was installed.

According to the review, the post-update performance is still not as bad as 50 percent of what Intel recommends, but for those who use Intel processing chips for purposes such as video editing, machine learning and artificial intelligence and so on, it will cause a significant drop in productivity.

Intel has already said that it expects that the update will cause a performance drop of as high as 50 percent for certain processes and tasks, and while the performance drop shown isn't as bad as expected, it still causes issues for those who need that processing power.
