A few weeks ago the Google Message interface for support for sending emergency messages with satellites was dropped. Support on Android devices is accomplished with Qualcomm Snapdragon Satellite which is not yet widely used.
Most recently, Google has reportedly partnered with Garmin for this satellite messaging feature. This feature is said to be offered to more than 200 countries, more than Apple currently offers. Neïl Rahmouni has again found code on the Google Message app, suggesting the feature will connect users to the Garmin Response center.
Sending emergency messages using satellite is still limited to selected smartphones only. This is because it requires a device powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, for example the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra which will use Iridium Communications services.
It's good that Google cooperates with Garmin because at Garmin Response there are employees who are active for 24 hours and can reply to messages with users who need help. On the Garmin site, Malaysia accepts this support.
Since the satellite telecommunication feature was activated on the iPhone 14 device since November last year. There have been several incidents of device owners being rescued even without cellular support. In the forest fire incident in Hawaii last week, for example, there were victims who managed to make calls after the island's cellular system was down.
