Mainframe computers use the COBOL language which was developed in 1959. Although this language is very old, there are still mainframes that use it for pension management, airplane ticketing systems and electrical power control. With the number of individuals who still know how to program using COBOL decreasing, the legacy code used today needs to be changed so that the current system can continue to be used.
IBM has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) Watsonx Code Assistant for Z that can "translate" COBOL code into Java for use on existing mainframes. According to IBM, Watsonx Code Assistant for Z can reduce costs and risks when doing the modernization process of an organization's mainframe.
Watsonx Code Assistant for Z is developed based on Watsonx.ai model code that understands 115 programming languages by being trained with 1.5 trillion tokens. It will be offered to customers in Q4 2023.
