Infineon announced a €5 billion (~RM24.88 billion) five-year investment in Malaysia to build a 200mm SiC (silicon carbide) Power Fab chip factory in Kulim, Kedah. It will be the world's largest SiC chip factory when construction is completed. Infineon targets €7 billion a year in revenue to be recorded through the SiC chip maker by the end of the decade.
This investment further strengthens Infineon's position which has been established in Malaysia for the past five decades. SiC 200mm Power Fab technology is not the latest but it is still needed in automotive, industrial, solar, energy storage and high power charging of electric vehicles.
Malaysia is one of the important chip production hubs in the world. The implementation of the MCO during the pandemic caused a global chip supply shortage. Among Infineon's customers are Ford, SAIC and Chery.
