Agence France-Presse, European Pressphoto Agency, European Publishers' Council, Gannett USA TODAY Network, Getty Images, National Press Photographers Association, National Writers Union, News Media Alliance, The Associated Press and The Authors Guild have issued joint statements urging their intellectual property respected by developers of generative artificial intelligence (AI).
While praising the ability of generative AI to produce realistic images, all of these photographers' associations warned that generated images could cause people to lose trust in the media. AI model training should also not infringe on intellectual property (IP) with developers having to seek permission from IP holders first.
At the same time AI-generated images should have clear and consistent labels to avoid public confusion. So far Google has confirmed that they will start displaying labels on AI-generated images on Google Images search results.
