Last week RedMagic 8S Pro was launched in Malaysia with it using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Leading Edition chip. This started some speculation as to how this chip differs from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy used in Samsung devices.
According to XDA Developers, Qualcomm confirmed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Leading Version and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy are the same chip. Both have Cortex-X3 cores clocked at a higher speed of 3.36 GHz compared to just 3.2 GHz on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The GPU speed is also boosted to 719Mhz compared to 680MHz on the regular edition.
Qualcomm also said the difference between the Leading Version and For Galaxy is that they work with Samsung in sharing camera technology. But in other respects both chips are identical. That is why both chips also use the same mod name which is SM8550-AC.
This year it can be said that Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Leading Version is "Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2" which was not officially launched. Qualcomm did not disclose whether there are other manufacturers using this chip. What is confirmed is that Qualcomm chip production for smartphones will shrink by 25% in Q3 2023.
