The most popular chip architecture at the moment is ARM. But companies using the ARM architecture have to pay for a license. So last week Robert Bosch GmbH, Infineon Technologies AG, Nordic Semiconductor, NXP Semiconductors, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc announced new companies that want to advance the use of the RISC-V architecture to drive next-generation hardware.
Unlike ARM, RISC-V (called RISC Five) can be used without any license because it is offered as open source. This new company established in Germany will accelerate the commercialization of future products based on the RISC-V architecture.
It also serves as a single source for enabling compatible RISC-V-based products, provides a reference architecture, and helps create widely used solutions in the industry. The initial application focus was in the automotive industry before also being used in mobile and IoT devices.
Google confirmed last January that Android will support RISC-V architecture. Among the RISC-V supporters are Huawei, ZTE, Alibaba Cloud, Tencent, Google, Intel, and Seagate.
