SKMM – Sharing the Video of the Plane Crash Victim in Elmina May Be Actionable

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) today reminded people not to share videos or photos of the victims of the private plane crash that happened in Elmina yesterday.

In this horrific tragedy, 10 individuals were killed consisting of 2 pilots, 6 passengers and two other road users after the plane crashed while in the process of landing at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport after starting the journey from Langkawi.

MCMC reminds the public of the importance of respecting and showing high empathy. Sharing photos or video recordings of accident victims can not only offend the victim's family but also violate the most basic principles and ethics. It is important for all individuals to exercise due judgment when downloading photos of victims of tragedy and not to spread or further share the content.

Any sharing involving photos or videos of victims of the tragedy and any party involved may be subject to legal action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
