Audio from the genre of "ambient sounds" or white noise is very popular on Spotify with over 3 million hours streamed every day.
According to a Bloomberg report, Spotify wants to ban ambient sounds from their platform as a cost-saving measure. Each year Spotify is believed to pay $38 million to ambient sound content producers. This is seen as a disadvantage as it is not easily advertised compared to podcast or music content.
In addition to blocking ambient sounds on Spotify, they will reportedly also delete them directly from the platform. Existing algorithms will be changed to not recommend this content to customers. If this report is true, it is a move that we feel is detrimental. Even though my child is now grown up I still listen to environmental sounds before going to bed because it is soothing. I had to move to YouTube.
