Tesla Sued For Allegedly Lying About Vehicle Range

Tesla was sued by three owners of their electric car in California yesterday. In the same writ filed, Tesla is alleged to have lied about the distance the Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y can travel. The algorithm used on the vehicle's display system is alleged to be inflated compared to the actual distance based on battery capacity.

The vehicle will only display the actual travel distance after the battery reaches 50%. One of the individuals who filed suit said his Model Y lost 182 miles of driving range after the car was driven 92 miles. It is not known if Tesla still uses the same algorithm to predict the distance a vehicle will travel based on the battery in the current software.

The suit was filed after Reuters reported that Tesla had set up a “Driving Team” that made customers cancel mileage-related appointments after being bombarded with complaints. Tesla did not comment on the Reuters report.
