For the past decade there have been efforts to make robotaxis - self-driving taxis - a reality but it has not yet been achieved due to technological constraints. Level 5 is the highest with no human intervention at all but at the time Mercedes was the only company that marketed the most advanced self-driving system only Level 3.
Toyota and Pony.ai today announced a collaboration to produce robotics with Level 4 self-driving capabilities. The two companies will invest RMB 1 billion to develop this self-driving system. Toyota will supply the electric vehicle with the various sensors required for Level 4 driving through the PonyPilot+ software.
The two companies have previously collaborated in robotics tests in the cities of Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. Since last April, the Toyota Sienna Autono-MaaS (S-AM) car has been tested with Pony.ai's sixth generation self-driving software.
