X Slowed Down The Process Of Linking To Competitor And News Pages

X (formerly Twitter) was today accused of slowing down links to outside websites belonging to competitors and some news organizations. The Washington Post report said that links to Threads, Reuters and the New York Times took up to five seconds to open after an address was pressed in an X tweet.

Prior to this X blocked links to competitor sites such as Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky to prevent users from migrating to other platforms. After this news was reported, X immediately stopped taking the time to open links. However, X did not give reasons why the link to the selected lamas was slowed down and why it was eventually discarded in haste.

One of the reasons why Elon Musk bought Twitter was because he wanted to "safeguard the right to freedom of speech". He accused Twitter of hindering freedom of speech by hanging several accounts of ultra-conservative individuals. What X is doing is embracing the principle of freedom of speech.
