Apple will maintain the use of Qualcomm's 5G modem on the iPhone until 2026. In a statement issued by Qualcomm today, Apple agreed to extend their agreement to use the modem which should expire at the end of 2023.
This may be an early sign that the development of a standalone 5G modem by Apple has not yet reached a satisfactory level. Previously they tinkered with their own modems but they offered slower internet speeds than Qualcomm's.
The two companies previously sued each other over 5G model patents before settling out of court. Because of this, Apple was rumored to use a standalone modem this year through the iPhone SE Gen 4 which was later cancelled.
