Clinical Trials of Human Tooth Regrowth Treatment to Be Performed Next Year

Adult humans will have 32 permanent teeth after all the baby teeth have been removed. Due to age and oral health factors, the number of teeth will begin to decrease due to the damage that occurs. We are taught that once a permanent tooth is removed, it cannot be replaced. Humans have been using dentures since 7 BC to solve this issue.

Scientists in Japan have now announced they will begin clinical trials that allow human teeth to grow back. The study was conducted by Dr. Katsu Takahashi from Kyoto University since 2005. Five years ago the team he knew managed to grow teeth in lab rats. This is done after detecting certain genes can have an effect on tooth growth.

By using the USAG-1 antibody on this gene, the mouse's body can be directed to produce new teeth. Then the test was done on a ferret with a human-like tooth structure and again it was successful. Human clinical trials will be conducted in July 2024 involving children with anodontia. This disease causes them to grow up without baby teeth.
