Government Considers Requirement For Social Media Companies To Register And Have License

The Ministry of Communications and Digital is currently considering the need for giant social media and internet platforms such as Google, Meta and TikTok to be horizontal and have a license to operate. This is because these platforms generate income, and have an impact on local media companies.

Through several government discussions, several steps are being considered to enable the platform to contribute back to local media companies.

This registration and licensing is expected to lead to the survival of the local media industry, as well as help in ensuring that local media companies continue to generate income.

It is not yet known how internet platform companies will react to this. Previously, it was shared by less than 3% of users on Facebook who saw news content, and the absence of news on their platform is expected to have no serious impact on the platform. This is already proven after Facebook did not display news content in Canada recently.
