The Department of Statistics Malaysia has now released findings based on the 2020 Malaysian Census that has been done before, as well as sharing some new interesting data. One of them is touching on social media.
According to the Malaysia Census 2020, WhatsApp is the social media platform with the highest number of users in Malaysia, where 13.6 million of the 16 million people who responded said they use it. It is followed by Facebook which is used by 12.3 million respondents, and then 39.2% (6.3 million respondents) say they use Instagram.
Telegram is said to be used by only 23.2% (3.7 million people) of respondents, while X by 11.7% of respondents (1.9 million people).
Interestingly, according to the data, Johor Bahru has the highest WhatsApp users, and also the highest Facebook users at the district level. Meanwhile, Petaling, Selangor is seen to have the most Instagram and X (Twitter) users.
Census data also shows that the percentage of men exceeds women in the use of Facebook, WhatsApp and LinkedIn. While the percentage of female respondents exceeds that of males in the use of Instagram, X (Twitter) and Telegram platforms.
