PCIe Gen5 SSD storage was introduced this year for desktop computers and shows very fast data read and transfer rates, around 14-15GB/s through some of the leading SSD storage manufacturers.
One issue that plagues this storage is that although it comes with a large storage size offering and also a fast data reading and transmission speed, it is also seen to come with a very high temperature that can cause the storage as well as the motherboard and the components around it to breaks down quickly.
This led many companies to introduce cooling blocks for PCIe Gen5 SSDs and why they are only used with desktop computers for now, even though they can technically be supported on laptops.
SiliconMotion's Product Planning Manager, Liu Yaoren expects that this Gen5 PCIe SSD storage will be ready for use in laptops by the end of 2024, when they finish developing their SM2508 SSD controller, which not only comes with a data read rate of 14GB/s, but can also operate at 3.5W is lower than the Phison E26 controller which operates at 5W.
A laptop with support for PCIe Gen5 SSDs has already been shown, but for now, due to the issues still plaguing the SSD storage, it will only be ready for use when storage developers can fix the thermal issue.
