With the launch of the Meta Quest 3 and the second generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses this morning, Qualcomm also announced two more new chips in their portfolio. The two chips Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 are designed specifically for XR headsets as well as AR wearables.
Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 brings a 2.5X higher increase in GPU compared to Snapadragon XR2 Gen 1 launched in 2019 and used in Meta Quest 2. In addition it can bring a breakthrough mode with a latency of only 12ms. In addition, it can also support more sensors and camera systems, WiFi 7 and GPU that provide energy savings of up to 50% compared to the previous generation.
Meanwhile the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 is a dedicated chip for smart glasses that do not require high power. It can take photos at a maximum resolution of 12MP and videos at 6MP. It can also support the built-in smart glasses display up to 1280×1290 pixels. Finally it also has enough power to support the AI systems required on modern smart glasses.
