Samsung Will Use Generative AI And Dedicated AI Chips On Smart Home Appliances

Samsung has the SmartThings internet of things ecosystem that allows not only smart devices but TVs, kitchen appliances, air conditioning systems, robots and their output lights to be controlled. At IFA 2023, Samsung confirmed it will use generative artificial intelligence (AI) on smart home appliances.

Yoo Mi-young, head of software development for Samsung's digital appliances said generative AI will be applied to the voice, vision and display capabilities of smart home appliances. When voice commands are given for example, the device will be able to chat with the user like a real human. In terms of vision, it can better understand what it is seeing, such as what is being cooked and what is in the fridge.

Also to be developed are chips for smart home appliances that save power. This chip when used will only consume 0.1 Watt power every 24 hours it operates. This is another Samsung effort to produce more sustainable products specifically in a world where the cost of electricity bills is increasing.

Samsung also did not say when this home appliance with generative AI will start to be offered. What is known so far is that Samsung developed generative AI for its own use with the help of Naver a few months ago.
