Singapore Blocks Banking Apps From Access If Sideload Apps Are Detected

Since recently many users have reported the issue of their savings in the bank continuing to disappear or there are unidentified transactions taking place without any knowledge. Among the reasons it happens are users who like to click on suspicious links or install fake applications that steal data.

DBS Bank and United Overseas Bank (UOB) have recently updated their applications. Users cannot access this banking application if another application installed as a sideload or installed from an unauthorized source is detected.

The bank application can only be accessed after the device detects that there are no suspicious applications installed on the user's device. This is the same move done by OCBC and Citibank before.

In Malaysia, bank applications such as CIMB or MAE can only be accessed if the device system has been modified such as root, use of custom ROM, installation of Magisk and others related. Even so, most bank applications in Malaysia can still be accessed if smart users install the Pass Safetynet module.

This move by DBS, UOB, OCBC and Citibank is a good thing and has been praised by many cyber security experts. In my opinion, banks in Malaysia should follow this step so that users are safer and do not use dangerous applications and blame the bank if problems occur.
