Alongside the launch of their HEDT AMD Ryzen Threadripper and Threadripper Pro desktop computer processing chips, AMD has also shown their latest graphics offering, the AMD Radeon RX 7900M which is also said to be their most powerful laptop graphics card to date.
The development focus of the AMD Radeon RX 7900M is seen to drive gaming laptops with the best performance at 1440p resolution, which is now seen as the resolution of choice for gaming on a laptop.
This graphics chip is developed using the same RDNA 3 technology as used on the previous AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics card and interestingly also uses "chiplet" technology like what is used on the AMD Ryzen 3000 CPU and above.
In terms of specifications, this Radeon RX 7900M graphics chip comes with 72 Compute Units and 16GB of GDDR6 memory, where the previous graphics chip, Radeon RX 7600M XT comes with 32 Compute Units and 8GB of GDDR6 memory. But if the previous graphics chip consumed 128W of power, this latest chip is seen to be able to consume 180W at its maximum capacity, which is also much higher than this graphics card's challenger, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 for laptops which only needs 110W.
This graphics chip, like all other RDNA 3 graphics offerings also comes with AMD's latest graphics technology support such as FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 which and according to AMD, the use of this technology in games like Forspoken, at 1440p resolution and high settings allows it to be moved at a refreshing rate 201FPS.
For games like Starfield, using FSR 2 technology with Ultra settings at the same resolution and found that it can be moved with a refresh rate of 62FPS.
It is expected that this laptop using the AMD Radeon RX 7900M graphics chip will be introduced around the end of this year.
