Everyone knows that Google pays Apple to ensure that their search engine is the default service on the Safari web browser. Although Google was sued, to this day Google Search is still maintained on Safari.
Recently during a court hearing on Google's anti-monopoly practices, Apple revealed that it had discussed with DuckDuckGo to make their service the default search engine in Safari's private mode.
DuckDuckGo representatives stated they were surprised that Apple had never integrated this privacy and security-focused search engine. Apple representatives said they were never serious about replacing Google with DuckDuckGo.
Now in iOS 17, Apple has allowed users to choose whether to use a different search engine in normal browsing mode versus private mode in Safari. However, Google is still the default. This was proposed because Google was allegedly practicing a monopoly for the search engine and did not prevent other services from competing.
