C2PA Introduces Symbols To Label AI Generated Images

Images generated by generative artificial intelligence (AI) are now increasingly realistic making it difficult to distinguish between fake and real images. Various initiatives have been initiated to reduce the impact of generative AI images that have now begun to flood the internet. Therefore the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) in collaboration with Adobe, Microsoft, Nikon, Leica, Camera Bits, Truepic, and Publicis Groupe has introduced a special symbol for images generated by AI.

The “Content Credentials” logo can be placed on images generated using Adobe Photoshop and Bing Image Creator. It needs to be placed by those who generate images manually. When images are shared to the internet, the Content Credential logo can be seen. When pressed information about who produced it, what software was used and the date when it was generated will be readable. Also readable is the history of every edit that has been made to the image since it was generated.

The validity of the image with this logo can also be checked through the C2PA site if necessary. At this time the use of the logo is still voluntary by those who generate it. It's not the best solution at the moment but it's the right step towards making AI images easier to track.

C2PA was originally established to combat manipulated image content on the internet. Nikon and Leica cameras for example have hidden meta data on the digital images taken that confirm their authenticity.
