China Targets 300 exaFLOP Computing Capability By 2025

High performance computers (HPC) such as supercomputers are needed to perform complex calculations such as weather and construction simulations. Recently, supercomputers are also needed to train a variety of modern artificial intelligence (AI) which is now seen as a necessity in various sectors. To ensure their country remains competitive in the world of technology, China now aims to have a computing power of 300 exaFLOPs by 2025.

Currently China has a computing power of around 195 exaFLOPs. The Sunway-Tianhulight-A supercomputer that was shown last year, for example, has the ability to process 5.3 exaFLOPs. With computing capabilities increasing by 50%, China can continue to compete in the artificial intelligence sector.

But this Chinese effort faces various obstacles. The United States imposed sanctions on several Chinese computer companies a few years ago because it did not want their supercomputer technology to be used for military purposes. Exports of AI chips produced by AMD and NVIDIA also began to be blocked by America for the same reason.
