In the history of the world, only Russia, the United States and China have ever successfully sent astronauts into space using locally made rocket systems. On October 21, India will take the first step towards becoming the fourth country to do so with the launch of the TV-D1 mission.
The TV-D1 mission will launch a space capsule that can take astronauts to an altitude of about 17 kilometers before it is ejected from a rocket and returned to Earth using a parachute. A total of four emergency system test missions will be carried out before the Gaganyaan-1 mission launches the capsule into orbit. If all goes well, India will send its first three astronauts using its own rocket system as early as 2025.
The test mission was originally supposed to launch in 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic. This year India also became the first country to successfully send a probe and rover to the south pole of the Moon through the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
