A picture of the construction of the toll plaza on the way up to Genting Highlands via Gohtong Jaya went viral this morning. Although Genting has not issued an official statement, Sin Chew Daily reports that toll payments will only be taken for vehicles traveling up to Genting Highlands and no charge will be made for the journey down.
Since opening in 1965, this is the first time a toll will be charged to go to the resort with the world's record-holding hotel. Why only now the collection is still a mystery because all this time the cost of road maintenance can be borne by Genting.
There are rumors that the collection will be taken from June 2024. Genting has not yet confirmed this report when the article was written. For information, the road in question is a private road, so any decision is not by the government.
