Lenovo Targets 80% of Their Products to be Self-Repairable by Owners by 2025

Purchased devices are typically difficult for owners to repair themselves because manufacturers refuse to provide components. It has become common for torx-headed screws to be used to prevent users from opening problematic devices themselves. According to a report by The Register, Lenovo wants to make a paradigm shift with the goal of allowing 80% of their products to be repaired by the owner by 2025.

Luca Rossi, Lenovo's senior vice president said this is the company's target during the Canalys EMEA Forum 2023 event. This is part of the company's efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2025. According to him, components such as batteries, SSDs and more will be able to be repaired by the owner himself. Indirectly this will reduce the impact on the environment because the device cannot be repaired.

Among the practices carried out by manufacturers is soldering memory and storage directly to the motherboard. On products such as the ThinkPad, the SSD and RAM are self-replaceable. Owners are simply discouraged from repairing the device themselves with a sticker that says the warranty will be voided if it is torn.
