Malaysia's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Code of Ethics Expected to be Completed in 2024

Last June, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) announced that a code of ethics and governance of artificial intelligence (AI) was being developed in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, representatives of government agencies, higher education institutions and industry. This week the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Chang Lih Kang, said this code of ethics and governance is expected to be completed next year.

The Malaysian Standards Department (JSM) has established a special committee, the National Mirror Committee, chaired by MIMOS Berhad to produce national artificial intelligence (AI) standards. This is to examine the need to create legislation and acts related to AI.

This framework is needed given the increasing use of AI in parallel with the issue of its misuse. The existing bill does not have a clause for the issue of the use of AI in Malaysia. In addition to touching on the issue of data use for model training, privacy and security, AI also has an impact on the careers of Malaysians in the near term. Malaysia is one of the countries in the world that is drafting AI ethics and governance codes.
