The war in Gaza and Israel also took place on various social media platforms with supporters of the two warring sides also fighting in cyberspace. Among the issues reported by users is that their Facebook and Instagram content is deleted or their accounts are hidden through the shadow ban technique. The pro-Palestinian content was seen to be the most affected, making many accuse Meta of favoring Israel.
Meta Communications Director Andy Stone however said this was not an intentional act by the platform. Instead it is caused by a bug in the system that has already been repaired. According to him, users upload content that shows violent acts that are detected by the system. That is why there are many Reels that show the situation after Gaza was bombed have been deleted automatically.
The issue of graphic content featuring death and severe injury is simply not allowed by various platforms. But should it be enforced in conflict situations?
