Previously, in 2015, Microsoft introduced free operating system update support to Windows users, allowing those using Windows 7 or Winodws 8 to upgrade to the latest operating system Windows 10. The move also covers upgrades to Windows 11 shortly thereafter.
This allows users to upgrade to a new version of the operating system without paying extra – especially when using Windows 7 or Windows 8.
However, the matter is now terminated by Microsoft. This is also possible because Windows 7 and Windows 8 have been out of support for a long time. Microsoft says this free update offer should have ended around 7 years ago, but has been extended until now.
With this move, users can no longer upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11 for free if using Winodws 7 or Windows 8. Users may need to get a new license for the upgrade, or need to get a new computer using the latest operating system.
Upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10 remains free for now.
