Microsoft Researches The Ability To Store Data In Glass – Lasting Up To Thousands Of Years

Today, various data centers use magnetic storage based which has several limitations, including one of which is durability which cannot last so long. In parallel, Microsoft is now sharing the research and project they are developing, called Project Silica.

Through this new project, Microsoft developed a new storage technology that uses glass plates to store data - said to last for thousands of years. According to Microsoft, several TB of data can be stored on each glass plate, and can last up to 10,000 years.

In addition to longer data durability, the use of this new technology is also expected to use less space – but be able to accommodate more data.

However, Microsoft states that for now, this technology is not yet ready for commercialization. The development has to go through up to 3 to 4 more phases, before it is ready for commercial use.
