The most prominent artificial intelligence (AI) company on earth right now is OpenAI. Through DALL.E and ChatGPT, they managed to start an AI war with now all developed, developing countries and major tech companies rushing to develop their own generative AI. According to a Reuters report today, OpenAI is now interested in developing their own AI chips.
Among the issues OpenAI is currently facing is the lack of supply for AI chips such as those produced by NVIDIA. The sudden rise in demand has also caused the cost of buying AI chips to rise. Among the solutions that Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, wants to take is to use self-designed chips.
It is not known whether this plan will continue or not. Building your own chips will reduce costs in the long run but requires a large initial investment. Meta itself began to lay off FAST staff under the Meta Reality Lab after failure to produce chips for metamesta devices. Instead Qualcomm chips are used now.
NVIDIA holds 80% of the AI chip market now until its sale is blocked by the US Department of Commerce to ensure it does not fall into the hands of national enemies.
