Taiwan Investigates Four Companies Allegedly Helping Huawei Build Its Own Chips

A few days ago there were reports claiming that Huawei received the help of four Taiwanese firms to produce the Kirin 9000s chip used in their new devices. Through this chip, Huawei returns to using its own chip and supports 5G networks. But America claims Huawei has bypassed technology restrictions to produce this 7nm chip.

According to a Nikkei Asia report, Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs initiated an investigation into the four companies. The two companies that have been identified are Topco Scientific and United Integrated Services (UIS). Topco says they are simply involved in environmental protection with a subsidiary of Huawei.

Meanwhile, UIS said they are renovating the inside of a semiconductor manufacturing plant belonging to a subsidiary of Huawei. They also issued a statement to comply with all laws, policies and guidelines set by the government.

The four companies have not been found guilty of helping Huawei circumvent technology restrictions at this time. Previously, the United States claimed that China still did not have the local technological expertise to produce 7nm chips. So the Kirin 9000s chip definitely uses a restricted technology.

Until today, Huawei and SMIC have not issued an official statement saying that the Kirin 9000s is developed with its own technology. This step may be taken by Huawei because there are reports that America will also prevent the sale of all chips to them in the near future.
