Vivo Executive Arrested In India On Money Laundering Charges

Four Vivo executives have been detained in India by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) which has powers in any financial related crime. They were initially called to appear at the ED before being arrested with one of them being a Chinese national. Vivo was previously accused of illegally laundering money worth 624 billion Rupees (~RM34 billion) out of India to China to avoid paying taxes.

As a result, 134 bank accounts owned by Vivo India were frozen before the court returned them to Vivo. Vivo has already released a statement denying the accusations, saying that the company operates according to the guidelines and laws of India. Actions against some Chinese companies in India began to be taken by the authorities after a battle between the armies of the two countries on the Himalayan border.

This led to hundreds of applications from China including WeChat and TikTok being banned in India because they were allegedly used for spying on Indian citizens.
