The Ray-Ban Meta is one of the smart glasses on the market this year and we had the chance to test it during the Snapdragon Summit event a few weeks ago. Today during the Mediatek Tech Summit event, Meta announced that they will use MediaTek's products in their next AR smart glasses.
An announcement that certainly surprised Qualcomm because all this time Meta used their chips exclusively. Ray-Ban Meta glasses, for example, use the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip. The chip that will be used later will be jointly developed by MediaTek and Meta. There is no date when the next smart glasses will be launched by Meta. The collaboration is also limited to smart glasses only and not XR headsets like the Meta Quest which still stick with Qualcomm chips.
There are rumors that Meta has plans to launch smart glasses with augmented reality (AR) capabilities in the future. It's a product that has been offered by Oppo recently. What is certain is that through the collaboration with Meta, MediaTek can no longer be seen as a cheap chip manufacturer because their products are now more comparable to those offered by Qualcomm and Exynos.
