Spotify Only Pays Google 4% For Every Subscription Because of Special Treatment

App developers have to pay 15% to Google on all payments made through the Play Store. But in the ongoing Epic Store vs. Google lawsuit, Spotify was revealed to only have to pay a 4% cut of each payment.

Even better is that Spotify doesn't have to pay anything to Google if the payment is made outside of the Play Store. This is because Spotify is given special treatment by Google since it is one of the applications with the highest number of monthly subscriptions. Google is believed to be trying to keep this secret from the public to prevent other application developers from asking for the same treatment.

Unlike on the Android platform, Spotify has to pay a cut of up to 30% to Apple for payments through the App Store. This led Spotify to report Apple to the European Commission earlier this year. Spotify also now no longer accepts subscription payments through the App Store to avoid taking a cut from Apple.
