The Government Considers Mandating Social Media to Have an Operating License in Malaysia

The Minister of Communications and Digital, Fahmi Fadzil has now shared that the government is considering various matters, including the requirement to require social media to have an operating license. With this step, it will make it easier for the authorities to order social platforms to comply with the law and all the instructions set in this country.

Previously, the government had been disappointed with several platforms that did not provide full cooperation in curbing the spread of fake news, in addition to several other consequential matters.

In fact, on Facebook, one of the worrisome concerns is various fraudulent advertisements - which also use pictures of artists and celebrities.

The Minister stated that the problem related to this matter needs to be resolved immediately. The same thing was also mentioned in September 2023 - showing that the government is seriously looking at this matter.
