2nm Semiconductor Chip Production For Apple Devices Expected As Early As 2025

News about the production of semiconductor chips for new SoC-SoCs such as the Apple Silicon, Qualcomm Snapdragon and MediaTek Dimensity series of processing chips developed by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will usually come out relatively early.

DigiTimes recently reported that Apple is expected to be the first company with a 2nm processing chip manufactured by TSMC around the middle of 2025. This is seen in line with our report last December which said that TSMC would activate their 2nm node around that time.

Apple being the first customer of TSMC's new node is nothing new. As their biggest customer, Apple will usually be the first company that will be given the option to develop their chips first before other customers such as Qualcomm, AMD and MediaTek.

Even so, it is not yet known whether Apple will introduce the chip in the same year. The same report says that the probability is greater that this 2nm chip will be introduced for updated iPhone and MacBook devices in 2026.

For this year, the Apple A18 Pro and M3 Ultra chips will be built using an updated 3nm process with slightly better capabilities compared to the A17 Pro and the M3, Pro and Max series introduced last year.

For the upcoming 2nm chip, TSMC will no longer use the FinFET technique that was used before, and will use the GAAFET (Gate All Around Field Effect Transistors) technique which reportedly also allows TSMC to develop semiconductor chips with greater performance with much more energy consumption efficient
