As expected, the Artemis III mission that will bring astronauts back to the surface of the moon is now postponed to 2026 compared to the original schedule of 2025. According to NASA the postponement had to be done due to various safety issues involving the Orion capsule that will carry astronauts
Among the issues faced is that there are many components that need to be tested such as batteries and circuits that control vital life systems such as temperature control and air circulation. More time is needed to test Orion before it is truly certified safe. Analysis of the temperature tiles on the Orion capsule used in the Artemis I Mission in 2022 has also not yet been completed.
Therefore, the Artemis II mission that brought four human astronauts around the moon was postponed to September 2025 while the Artemis III mission that will bring astronauts back to the moon's surface was also postponed to September 2026. The last time humans walked on the moon's surface was in 1972 through the Apollo 17 mission .
