Creator of Protocol to Standardize Online Time Dies

Time is golden and when online, it ensures the connection between internet browsers is always accurate to ensure data is sent accurately to its destination. All of this would not have been possible if Network Time Protocol (NTP) had not been created by Dr. David L. Mills who died on January 17. His death was only announced on the 20th of last month by his son.

Network Time Protocol (NTP) has been used since 1985 and is one of the earliest protocols created for computer networks that is still used today. Dr Mills got the Idea of creating NTP while involved with the ARPANET project. He realized that the connection between computers in the same network had to have an accuracy of up to a few milliseconds. Now NTP is used by billions of devices that have a connection to the internet.

The cause of Dr David Mills' death was not disclosed but he died at the age of 85. Because of his contribution to the advancement of the computing world, he received the IEEE Internet Award in 2013. In addition to his involvement in the creation of NTP, he also contributed to the creation of "Ping" and the FTP system.
