Google has beaten Samsung in offering the longest device updates. If Samsung now offers 4+5 years, Google Pixel 8 receives updates for 7 years. Meaning, it can last until Android 20 and above.
Most recently, Mishaal Rahman reported that Google Pixel devices with Tensor chips, namely the Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series will receive the Linux kernel update 16.1 which is an upgrade to the current version 5.15. For now it is still unclear whether this kernel change will benefit users.
But in theory, it could potentially extend the lifespan of the device to receive updates for longer. Otherwise, it will bring smoother performance and more efficient power consumption for long-term use.
