Wear OS is an interesting smartwatch operating system. But to enjoy the latest features and functions, it is limited to Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch only. While other watches are limited to older generation Wear OS which takes 1-2 years to update.
Most recently, Samsung and Google have reportedly started developing Wear OS 5 based on Android 14 for the Galaxy Watch7 with the Exynos 5535 chip. There are no details of what new features will be brought but after the Galaxy Watch, Wear OS 5 is said to be given to the Pixel Watch 3 first.
This is a different thing than before because Google usually skips the Android version to develop Wear OS. For example Wear OS 2 is based on Android 9, Wear OS 3 Android 11 and Wear OS 4 Android 13. For Wear OS 5 which uses Android 14, a version after Wear OS 3 is a rare thing.
So far Wear OS 4 is still limited to Samsung and Google. Other watches are still running Wear OS 3.5 and it is not certain after Wear OS 5 is launched whether other watches will also receive it or remain exclusive to these two brands only.
