Samsung Develops Blood Sugar Detector That Doesn't Require Finger Pricks

It is estimated that 20% of adults in Malaysia suffer from diabetes and that makes our country have the highest number of patients in the Asia Pacific region. There is still no cure for this disease despite many cheesy advertisements on social media and roadside boards saying otherwise. After suffering, the patient needs to monitor the sugar level several times a day with a fingertip.

This process is not only painful but also exhausting. According to a Bloomberg report, Samsung confirmed that they are developing a blood sugar sensor that does not require a finger to be pricked. If all goes well, this blood sugar sensor will be offered on Samsung devices in five years.

At last week's Unpacked event, Samsung showed off the Galaxy Ring smart ring with health tracking capabilities. What its capabilities are compared to the sensor on the existing Galaxy Watch is still a mystery. For sure, a ring on the finger is more comfortable to wear while sleeping than a smart watch. This allows sleep tracking, blood pressure, breathing rate, body temperature and pulse to be tracked while sleeping more easily.

In addition, Samsung is also considering continuous blood pressure detection without the device undergoing a calibration process first. With round-the-clock tracking, any health issue can be tracked in real time. Putting temperature and pulse sensors on earphones is also among Samsung's short-term plans.

Samsung is currently behind Apple in the smartwatch market with health tracking capabilities. With the above features, maybe Samsung will be able to give competition to Apple because competition intensifies innovation.
